1. GMO Foods

GMO foods refer to genetically modified foods. This means that certain foods, primarily crop plants have been altered genetically in order to improve certain traits of the plant. Some of these traits which are desirable and are improved are things such as resistance to pesticides, and improved nutrition. Genetically modified plants may also be easier to grow, faster to grow and more nutritious. These traits are very important in a world where the population is growing exponentially. The more food that can be produced, and the more nutritious the food will mean that less people are hungry. Many people are afraid that genetically modified plants may be harmful because they are not natural or that the genetically modified genes may spread to other plants and have undesirable consequences. However, I feel that foods and plants are composed of DNA, a natural plant may not necessarily be composed of the most optimal type of DNA for human consumption. That is, there are many natural foods that are not that healthy and not easy to grow because natural occurring does not equal best for human consumption.  The alteration of DNA of crops may seem potentially unsafe, but if there is the right amount of regulation and safety testing, then the food can be confirmed to be safe to eat. The problem with GMO foods should not be whether or not they are safe or unsafe, because with the right amount of regulation and testing they can be made sure that they are indeed safe. GMO foods have many beneficial traits that can be beneficial to everyone, more foods can be produced, and certain foods can be more nutritious.
